Chapter 9

The Call

‘Remember. A deal for a deal. The vice president is now the president.’

‘I totally understand you,’ and the phone clicked.

‘What time does it start?’ Victor asked.

‘Sharp four,’ Ben replied.’

‘The prime minister has to be alerted as soon as possible,’ Maria said.

‘I’ll deploy the Scotland Yard in his protection. If anything more, I’ll myself go guard him,’ Campbell said.

‘I have the agenda. His speech is scheduled at 5:30pm,’ Ben said.

‘E-mail it to me right now,’ Campbell said. ‘We don’t have much time on us.’

‘Us?’ Maria said.

‘Yes. We protect the prime minister. It is up to us now,’ Campbell said, wearing his coat.

‘But we didn’t sign up for this,’ Maria said.

‘Well now you have. Congratulations!’ Campbell said and rushed off.

‘Can you believe that person?” she said, turning towards the other two.

‘Actually it makes sense. It’s like we are the last line of defense,’ Victor said.

‘Okay that I can buy,’ Maria said. ‘And where did Campbell go anyway?’

‘He has his methods. We now have to worry about it very little. Campbell can handle it well,’ Ben said.

‘Meanwhile, I’d appreciate if you set to work for the Kohinoor right away,’ he asked, handing over a file to Victor. ‘I have some background work prepared about it already.’

Victor went through the information in no time. There was more to the story. He had definitely read about the diamond but this was something else. This story had blown off his mind. He wondered why in all these years of reading he had never come across something so gripping.

“Years ago, the most expensive diamond ever, was stolen from the Tower Bridge in a daring attempt. The robber, along with a group of aircrafted members, caught red handed by the police, escaped very easily, whilst the police had surrounded them…..” and the article went on.

‘Days after the diamond was stolen, a whole story about it was published in Berlin’s newspapers. The source was one of the person who had helped snatch the diamond. There were a few mentions of it in the article but nothing major was known,’ Ben said after Victor had finished reading.

‘After the story was published, the group was caught by the Scotland Yard, who had by then, scattered all over the world, within eight months. Some had become businesspeople, the others were successful in their own respective fields. Though, after a great deal of punishments and beatings…’

‘Wait what? Beatings? To businesspeople?’ Victor asked.

‘Yes.’

‘Cold.’

‘Moving on, after the beatings and punishments they admitted stealing the diamond but were adamant about its location,’ Ben continued.

‘What next?’

‘After several days in custody, one of them tried to make a deal with the Yard. He would give a hint about its location in exchange for their freedom. The Yard had been waiting for that very moment. They willingly agreed.’

‘And what would the hint be?’ Maria asked.

‘The diamond lies in America,’ Ben said.

Victor and Maria anticipated more but Ben had already stopped. He instead waited for them to respond.

After ten seconds or so, they realized Ben was done. ‘That’s it?’ Victor asked.
